A key role for UONGOZI Institute is to create a platform for dialogue that expands the understanding of leadership and raises awareness around vital issues for leaders working towards the sustainable development of Africa. Our policy dialogues are held nationally and regionally, varying from small, specialised round table discussions to large forums.
They cover issues relating to natural resource management, green growth, women’s leadership, peace and security, regional integration, business and trade, plus local content.
Our flagship events include the African Leadership Forum (ALF), Green Growth Platform (GGP), and Women’s Leadership Forum (WLF).
ALF daws upon the experiences and insights of former heads of state to guide decision-makers through the trials and tribulations of leading change on the continent. Its dialogues comprehend the leadership issues that are behind the implementation of solutions to Africa’s sustainable development challenges.
GGP aims to increase awareness and understanding of issues related to green growth and its potential for Tanzania’s development. It is a proactive tool for creating cross-sectoral linkages, promoting economic and social wellbeing, and safeguarding the ecosystems and environment that sustain us all.
WLF brings together Tanzanian senior and emerging leaders to exchange ideas and share best practices to promote women’s inclusion in leadership roles. It offers a unique learning space for emerging women leaders as they get to understand how senior women leaders overcome barriers in their organisations and industries.
Our research work is grounded on the premise that the creation and provision of knowledge on leadership and sustainable development can play an important role in strengthening the capacity and transformation of leadership across the continent. The research also increases our internal knowledge in developing and delivering specialised training and policy programmes. We take two approaches: Applied research and action research.
Our two television programmes on leadership and sustainable development inspire senior and emerging leaders to strive towards making an impact. Climate change, gender equality, regional integration, Africa’s economic transformation, extractive sector development and many other topics are discussed by eminent leaders and renowned experts.
The interviews are broadcast on national television in Tanzania and satelite television across the continent. They are also available on our website and YouTube channel.
The Youth Leadership Competition is organised as a component of the African Leadership Forum (ALF) to provide a space for the youth of Africa and the next generation of leaders in the region to contribute to important discussions on leadership and sustainable development.
In each contest, African citizens between the age of 18 and 25 are asked to write about their perspectives on leadership as it relates to a theme tied to the ALF.
